Why Is My VPN Slow? (How to Fix)
VPN slowing you down? Here are the most common causes and how to fix them.

Common Causes of Slow VPN Speeds
Several factors can slow down a VPN connection:
- Server distance: Connecting to a server on the other side of the world adds latency. Try a closer server.
- Server load: Popular servers may get congested during peak hours. Switch to a different server in the same region.
- Protocol choice: Some protocols have more overhead than others. WireGuard is typically the fastest.
- Your base internet speed: A VPN cannot make your connection faster than your ISP provides.
- Network congestion: Your local network or ISP may be experiencing heavy traffic.
How to Fix Slow Speeds
- Switch to a closer server location
- Change your protocol to WireGuard (Settings > Protocol)
- Restart the Shieldeum app and reconnect
- Test your base speed without the VPN to establish a baseline
- If on Wi-Fi, try moving closer to your router or switching to a wired connection
- Close bandwidth-heavy apps running in the background
When to Contact Support
If your speeds are consistently below 50% of your base internet speed after trying the steps above, reach out to our support team. Include your server location, protocol, and speed test results so we can investigate further.
