VPN slowing you down? Here are the most common causes and how to fix them.

Common Causes of Slow VPN Speeds

Several factors can slow down a VPN connection:

  • Server distance: Connecting to a server on the other side of the world adds latency. Try a closer server.
  • Server load: Popular servers may get congested during peak hours. Switch to a different server in the same region.
  • Protocol choice: Some protocols have more overhead than others. WireGuard is typically the fastest.
  • Your base internet speed: A VPN cannot make your connection faster than your ISP provides.
  • Network congestion: Your local network or ISP may be experiencing heavy traffic.

How to Fix Slow Speeds

  1. Switch to a closer server location
  2. Change your protocol to WireGuard (Settings > Protocol)
  3. Restart the Shieldeum app and reconnect
  4. Test your base speed without the VPN to establish a baseline
  5. If on Wi-Fi, try moving closer to your router or switching to a wired connection
  6. Close bandwidth-heavy apps running in the background
