How to Choose the Best VPN Location

Picking the right server location affects speed, latency, and what content you can access. Here is how to choose wisely.

Why Server Location Matters

The server you connect to affects two things: your connection speed and the IP address websites see. A server closer to your physical location generally gives you faster speeds and lower ping, while a server in a different country changes your apparent location.

Shieldeum operates 77 server locations. Each location is a load-balanced access point with multiple servers behind it, so you always get distributed traffic and stable performance.

Choosing for Speed

If speed is your priority, connect to the server closest to you geographically. The Shieldeum app shows ping times for each location, making it easy to identify the fastest option.

As a general rule:

  • Same country or region: best for everyday browsing and downloads
  • Neighboring country: minimal speed impact, useful for accessing region-specific content
  • Distant locations (different continent): expect some speed reduction due to physical distance

Choosing for Privacy

For privacy-focused browsing, you might prefer a server in a country with strong data protection laws. That said, Shieldeum applies the same encryption and no-logs policy regardless of which server you use.

If your ISP is throttling specific types of traffic, any server location will help bypass that restriction since your ISP can no longer see what you are doing.

Using Auto-Connect

Not sure which server to pick? Use the quick connect button, and Shieldeum will automatically select the fastest available server based on your location and current network conditions. This is the recommended option for most users.
