How to Change VPN Protocols
Shieldeum supports multiple VPN protocols. Learn how to switch between them and when each one works best.
Available Protocols
Shieldeum offers several protocols, each with different strengths:
- WireGuard: Modern, fast, and lightweight. Best for most users.
- OpenVPN (UDP): Proven reliability with good speed. Works on nearly all networks.
- OpenVPN (TCP): Slower but more stable on unreliable networks.
- Stealth (OpenVPN over SSL): Disguises VPN traffic as regular HTTPS. Useful on networks that block VPNs.
- IKEv2: Fast reconnection after network changes. Good for mobile devices.
- L2TP/PPTP: Legacy protocols for older devices. Not recommended for security-sensitive use.
How to Switch Protocols
Changing your protocol in the Shieldeum app takes just a few taps:
- Open the Shieldeum app and go to Settings
- Find the "Protocol" or "Connection" section
- Select your preferred protocol from the list
- Reconnect to apply the change
Most users should stick with WireGuard unless they have a specific reason to switch. If you are on a restrictive network (corporate, school, or certain countries), try Stealth mode.
When to Change Protocols
Consider switching protocols if:
- You cannot connect at all (try OpenVPN TCP or Stealth)
- Your connection drops frequently (try IKEv2 or OpenVPN TCP)
- You want maximum speed (use WireGuard)
- You are on a network that blocks VPN traffic (use Stealth mode)
